April showers bring May flowers…
Did you know that you can use bouquets of flowers, called nosegays or tussie-mussies, to send messages? In Victorian times floriography, or the language of flowers, was used to send coded messages that couldn’t be spoken. Collier’s Cylopedia of Commercial and Social Information and Treasury of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge, 1882, proclaims grandly, “How the universal heart of man blesses flowers! …The Persian in the far East delights in their perfume, and writes his love in nosegays; while the Indian child of the far West claps his hands with glee as he gathers the abundant blossoms…How charmingly a young gentleman can speak to a young lady, and with what eloquent silence in this delightful language. How delicately she can respond, the beautiful little flowers telling her tale…”
In the Victorian language of flowers, you can congratulate a friend on a new job by sending a nosegay (from medieval times, the use of flowers to keep the “nose gay,” i.e., happy by masking the unpleasant odors of the day) of bells of Ireland (luck), borage (courage), oxeye daisy (patience), a few hollyhocks (ambition) and wheat (wealth and prosperity.) You are too shy to lavish compliments on your beloved? Send her a posey of variegated tulips (beautiful eyes), hibiscus (delicate beauty), a damask rose or two (brilliant complexion), and finish it off with statice (lasting beauty) and jasmine (grace and elegance.) Someone done you wrong? Rise above shouting and send a tussie mussie of aloe (grief), lobelia (malevolence), marigold (pain and grief), bird’s foot (revenge), yellow carnations (you have disappointed me) and coltsfoot (justice will be served.)
