What: Post Club Ramblers Walk and Lunch Where: The Arnold Arboretum, followed by lunch at the Alchemist When: Sunday, May 11, 11:30 a.m.; lunch at l:30. Cost: Lunch is al la carte. Pre-registration is required. What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than a wander through the Arboretum when the lilacs are in their full glory. The oldest arboretum in the country, it is celebrating its 100th Lilac Sunday, showcasing a dazzling array of over 180 kinds of lilacs with delightful fragrances and gorgeous colorsÑplus tours, dancing, art, music, children's activities, and food. Meet club member and walk leader Robyn Laing at the Arboretum visitor center at 11:30. What: Members Orientation Where: The Post Club Lounge When: Monday, May 12, 6:00 p.m. Cost: No charge, but pre-registration is requested. A member orientation is held at The Post Club every month. Diane Melby, Executive Director of the Post Club and former member, will explain the process of getting started with pictures and profile and making selections. Moreover, she'll answer any questions and provide tips and tricks to enhance your Post Club experience. What: Dinner and lecture on comets Where: ChangSho, 1712 Mass Ave, Cambridge, and the Harvard Observatory When: Thursday, May 15, 5:00 p.m. dinner, 7:00 lecture Cost: No charge for lecture; dinner is a la carts. Pre-registration is required. Comets have awed mankind throughout recorded history, suddenly appearing as blazing apparitions in our skies. We now know that they are really dusty iceballs orbiting the Sun, but they still hold plenty of surprises. Just last fall, comet 17P/Holmes brightened unexpectedly by a factor of 400,000 in just two days, and in early 2007, the brightest comet in 41 years was visible to the unaided eye in broad daylight. Comet expert Dan Green will discuss what we know about comets and how we know it. including the frequency with which comets actually hit Earth and how comets are discovered and named. There is parking available at the restaurant, mirabile dictu, and we'll walk to the Observatory from there. If it's a clear night, we'll go to the roof to see what we can see through the telescopes mounted there. What: Brunch and Winery tour Where: Nashoba Valley Winery, 100 Wattaquaduck Hill Road, Bolton, MA When: Sunday, May 18, 1:00 Cost: $6 for tour, payable there; $25 for the brunch, payable in advance. Pre-registration is required. Nashoba Valley Winery, established in 1978, has consistently won awards for its excellent wines. After brunch at J's Restaurant, awarded "Gourmet Greatness" by the Phantom Gourmet, we'll have the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous country setting of the orchards as well as the chance to try some of their twenty varieties of wine, along with hand crafted beers and distilled spirits. What: Happy Hour – meet the new President of the Post Club Where: The Zephyr Lounge, Hyatt Regency Hotel, 575 Memorial Dr., Cambridge When: Wednesday, May 21, 6:00 p.m. Cost: No charge, but pre-registration is requested. We'll gather at one of the Post Club's favorite watering holes, the Zephyr Lounge, where we'll have the opportunity to chat with Geoffrey Klein, the new President of the Post Club. Enjoy a cocktail and conversation while gazing at the river and Boston through the floor to ceiling windows of the lounge. What: Dinner on the north side Where: Kowloon's Restaurant, 948 Broadway (Rt. 1A), Saugus When: Thursday, May 29, 6:30 p.m. Cost: Dinner a la carte, but pre-registration is required.
Rt. 1 in Saugus is known for its unusual sights, from the huge dinosaur looming over a miniature golf courts to the Leaning Tower of Pisa at Prince Pizza as well as the Kowloon, a huge Chinese restaurant and entertainment complex. The Kowloon has a number of different rooms, complete with funky Polynesian themes, including a boat hanging from the ceiling, a lagoon surrounded by tables, and a luau room. The menu is equally eclectic, ranging from Flaming Ambrosias (chicken or shrimp served in a fiery pineapple shell) and Volcano Lichee Duck to the Red Auerbach Special (beef, shrimp and pea pods in black bean sauce) and Eddie Andellman Lo Mein, called "a fabulous dish toward wellness."
